GENERAL SUMMARY:                                                             
Provide pre- and post-operative nutrition assessments, counseling, and education to adult patients seeking or having had metabolic and bariatric surgery, as indicated for patient care, and as detailed below. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.

Screening and Assessment—Assess the metabolic and bariatric surgery patient by            screening the medical record; completing a comprehensive assessment based on medical record data and interview with the patient; and by assessing the patient based on religious, cultural and ethnic preferences.

Nutrition Counseling—Recommends appropriate nutrition intervention to the metabolic and bariatric surgery patient preoperatively and postoperatively based on subjective and objective data, including but not limited to, protein parameters, energy intake recommendations iron level, vitamin levels, and calcium level.

Education—Provides patient education in individual and group settings, materials based on patient’s age and comprehension levels. Provides appropriate resources and education according to identified need. Documents education provided, measurable understanding of principles discussed.

Communication/Documentation—Collaborates with physicians, nurses and other allied health staff to provide patient care. Documents nutritional care in the medical record, according to established policy, procedure and standards. Documents desired outcomes specific to the individual patient problem(s), diagnosis(es), learning capabilities/limitations, and progress towards established goals.

Performs other related duties as required.  Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relates to job assignment.


·         Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or related field

·         Active status as Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
